The sunken battleship destroyed during the Japanese attacks of Dec. 7, 1941, is the final resting place for many of the 1,177 crew members who lost their lives. Strict security measures prohibit all bags and items that offer concealment. A new visitors center is planned. Nearby, a shuttle bus can take you to the new Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island, an ambitious venture that features Japanese and American military aircraft and compelling stories from World War II. Everyone goes to Hanauma Bay, which sometimes leads to lines and crowding. Still, it's an amazing place where you can swim among exotic fish in a beautiful sheltered bay with an amazing coral reef habitat. It's well worth the 30-minute drive from Waikiki and easily accessible by city bus or taxi. Closed Tuesdays.

Hawaii's historic Bishop Museum holds artifacts from the Hawaiian monarchy of the 18th century, a natural history museum of the Pacific, a planetarium and cultural demonstrations. It's located off the major highway between Honolulu International Airport and downtown. Be sure to check out the lava melting presentation.

Visitors are surprised by the varied collection at this compact yet fully-stocked museum, which has a Monet and a Whistler but also the James Michener Collection of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The Hawaiiana collection is unsurpassed. Great for lunch, too. Located near downtown, not far from Waikiki.
